Follow-Up Imaging Observations of the fragmented Comet C/2025 K1

...

Left and middle: The middle pattern shows a R-band image of the fragmented comet C/2025 K1, taken on the morning of 18 November 2025 at the University Observatory in Großschwabhausen with the STK (14x DIT=60s). The diameter of the coma is about 52000 km. A parabolic shaped dust envelope aligned along the direction of the tail is visible in the image, which was probably emitted during the fragmentation process of the core of the comet. The left image is a detailed view of the STK R-band image, that shows the central part of the coma of the comet. Three fragments were detected with fragment C being the brightest one, followed by B (ΔR = 0.4 ± 0.2 mag) and A (ΔR = 0.9 ± 0.1 mag). The direction towards the Sun and that of the comet's heliocentric velocity are indicated with arrows. The projected separation between fragment A and C is 2422 ± 65 km, 3066 ± 128 km between fragment C and B, and 5449 ± 122 km between fragment A and B, respectively.

Right: Detailed view of the central part of the coma of comet C/2025 K1, observed with the STK on the morning of 21 November 2025 (6x DIT=30s) in the R-band. The direction towards the Sun and that of the heliocentric velocity of the comet are indicated with arrows. The three fragments are detected again but in this observation epoch fragment A is the brightest, followed by fragment B (ΔR = 0.5 ± 0.1 mag), while fragment C (ΔR=0.7 ± 0.1 mag) is the faintest of the three detected fragments. The projected separation between fragment A and C is 2881 ± 36 km, 3141 ± 40 km between fragment C and B, and 5904 ± 30 km between fragment A and B, respectively. Thus, the projected separation between the individual fragments has increase by about 10% and their brightness has changed significantly between both observation epochs.

Left: STK R-band image (12x DIT=60s) of comet C/2025 K1, taken on 7 November 2025. No fragments are detected.

Middle: STK R-band image (51x DIT=30s) of comet C/2025 K1, taken on 1 December 2025. No fragments are detected.

Right: STK R-band image (30x DIT=30s) of comet C/2025 K1, taken on 12 December 2025. A new fragment, firstly imaged with the STK on 11 December 2025, is separated by approximately 13.2 arcsec (6860 km) from the comet.
